Resolving Water Ingress Challenges in Shellharbour
A resident in Shellharbour encountered a serious and worsening problem with water ingress. Rainwater from two adjacent properties, situated at a higher elevation, began to flow into their yard, infiltrating beneath the home’s foundation. This water intrusion caused damage to the flooring, led to rising damp issues, and promoted mould growth within the property, jeopardising recent renovations.

How Can You Identify Signs of Water Intrusion?
The water ingress originated from both surface runoff and subsurface water flowing downhill from the back and side yards of neighbouring properties. In the absence of adequate drainage to intercept this incoming water, it was compelled to flow beneath the house, leading to significant problems.
How to Establish an Effective Drainage System
CS Plumbing designed and installed a gravity-fed French drain system, specifically crafted to capture and redirect water before it could penetrate the home’s foundation.
The project included several critical elements:
- A French drain system tailored to collect both surface and subsurface water from neighbouring properties, channelling it through gravity to a concrete pit.
- A 100mm PVC pipe connecting the pit to the curb, featuring meticulously drilled holes to ensure optimal water discharge.
- Three new, larger-diameter Colorbond metal downpipes replacing the original smaller versions, linked to new 100mm PVC piping directing water to the curb.
- A sturdy retaining wall system constructed along the boundary using concrete sleepers and galvanised steel posts, with auger holes drilled by an excavator to form a solid barrier that prevents water from the adjacent yard.
- Efficient on-site soil removal with a dumper for effective site management.
What Measures Guarantee Effective Water Management?
The newly installed system now efficiently captures surface and subsurface water at the property boundary, ensuring it is redirected away from the home. The homeowner has achieved a long-lasting, low-maintenance solution that protects their foundation, flooring, and investment in renovations.
